This Readme file provides the latest information about the Micro Dry™ printer driver.
Please read it thoroughly before using your ALPS Micro Dry MD-1000 Printer.
Installing the Micro Dry Printer Software
Use the installer to install the printer driver software on your hard disk. The installer copies the Micro Dry printer driver, the background printing software and Apple ColorSync® files to the correct locations in your System Folder.
If the installer finds a file that has the same name as you are installing, it replaces that file with the newer version.
The Micro Dry printer driver software is compatible with QuickDraw but is not compatible with QuickDraw GX. If your Macintosh system has installed
QuickDraw GX, disable it by following these steps.
A. Select Control Panel from the Apple menu.
B. Open the Extensions Manager.
C. Deselect QuickDraw GX in the list of items.
D. Close the Extensions Manager, and restart your Macintosh.
2. System Requirements
ALPS Micro Dry printer driver is compatible with both 68K-based and PowerPC Macintoshes running System 7.0.1 or later. The Micro Dry printer driver has been tested to operate with as little as 8 MB of memory in the system, but since printing full-color images requires large amounts of data, we recommend at least 16 MB.
Some applications (memory-intensive page layout or graphics applications)
require a large amount of memory to run. Having more memory will increase your flexibility and performance in working with applications.
Also, the Micro Dry printer driver needs to create a temporary spool file on the hard disk to produce highest quality output in a minimum of time. Make sure that there is at least 20 MB of free space on your hard disk when printing in full color.
3. Using Balloon Help
The Balloon Help is available, and it provides pop-up help for print settings.
To activate the Balloon Help, select Show Balloons from the Guide menu in the upper right corner of the menu bar and then place your mouse cursor over the print setting about which you need information.
4. Software Application Note
If you experience difficulties printing with some applications, please be sure you are using the latest version of that application. Contact the software manufacturer for the latest available version.
If an application needs specific information about the MD printer’s margin and printable area requirements, please use the following margin values:
Minimum Page Margins:
- Top margin 0.47 inches
- Bottom margin 0.59 inches
- Left margin 0.25 inches
- Right margin 0.25 inches
- Header margin: 0.47 inches
- Footer margin: 0.58 inches
The following notes describe known problems with certain applications.
4-1. Printing Footers in Microsoft Word
In some applications, such as Microsoft Word for Macintosh, the program’s default margin setting for the footer may be outside the printer’s printable area, causing the footer to print partially or not at all. (Although Microsoft Word will warn you if the page margins are outside the printable area, Word will not warn you if the header/footer margins are outside the printable area.) Since the default footer margin in Word is outside the printable area, you should reset this margin as described below, depending on the version of Word you’re using:
Word 6.0
A. Go to the File menu, and select Document Layout.
B. Select the Margins tab and locate the box titled From Edge that contains the Header and Footer margin settings.
C. Change the Footer margin from .5" to .58".
D. To ensure that the Footer prints correctly on all future documents, we recommend that you click on the Default button. Word will ask if you wish to change the “default setting for document layout.” Click Yes to change the default.
Word 5.1
A. Go to the Format menu, and select Section.
B. Locate the box titled Header/Footer that contains the header and footer margin settings.
C. Change the Footer margin from .5" to .58".
D. To ensure that the Footer prints correctly on all future documents, we recommend that you click on the Use As Default button to change the default setting for page setup.
4-2. Adobe Dimension 2.0
Your system may freeze if printing your document. This problem appears to be caused by an overflow error in QuickDraw.
To prevent this problem, print your document on a Custom Paper Size of less than 6.8 inches wide.
